man holding backLife is meant to be enjoyed. However, if you are one of the millions of people in the United States who suffer from debilitating back pain, then that may not be an easy task. Just getting through the day can be a challenge—never mind enjoying the time! Fortunately, your chiropractor in Naples offers several possible treatments to help alleviate your back pain. The appropriate therapy for you will depend on what is causing your pain. Don’t wait another day—because an enjoyable life is waiting for you!

Treating Lower Back Pain

Whether your lower back pain is mild or severe, a recent development or something you’ve been dealing with for years, chiropractic intervention can help. First, the reason for your pain needs to be diagnosed. Then, your chiropractor will recommend a course of treatment that may include spinal adjustment and rehabilitative exercises and stretching to help ease your pain. The objective is to restore mobility and normal bodily function so you don’t need to rely on pain relievers and other medications.

Your chiropractor can treat many causes of lower back pain including a pinched nerve, muscle spasm, pregnancy aches and pains, pressure on a nerve root (radiculopathy) and sciatica pain, which starts in your lower back and radiates down one or both legs.

Pain from Herniated or Bulging Discs

Although people often use the terms herniated disc and bulging disc interchangeably, they are actually two slightly different conditions. Unfortunately, both can be painful. With a herniated disc, the jelly-like material inside a disc pushes through the tough exterior and exerts pressure on the nerve of the spinal column. In the case of a bulging disc, this soft material presses on the disc’s exterior so that the disc itself then presses on the nerve.

When either of these conditions is diagnosed, your chiropractor may recommend spinal decompression therapy. With this treatment, pressure is relieved and that jelly-like substance (also known as the nucleus pulposus) is repositioned.

Treatment for Spinal Stenosis

Spinal stenosis is a type of disc degeneration. When this begins to happen, the space within your spine narrows, which can result in pressure on the nerves of the spinal column. Some of the symptoms of spinal stenosis include:

  • Intense pain
  • Numbness and tingling, especially in the arms and legs
  • Muscle weakness

If you have already been diagnosed with osteoarthritis, then you may be more prone to spinal stenosis. In severe cases, surgery may be the only solution. Patients with more mild symptoms may also want to try spinal decompression, which gently separates compressed discs so degenerated discs can heal.
